[fanmix] morning keep the streets empty - discword's night watch - the revolutionaries
For waywardmixes's fourth theme.

Sir Samuel Vimes, Commander of Ankh-Morpork City Watch, Duke of Ankh, Blackboard Monitor was chasing down the mass-murderer Carcer when the two of them get sent back in time and stranded. He takes on the mantel of his old mentor, John Keel, and tries to survive his best in the City's bad old days, stuck with his naive younger self, an incompetent Night Watch, and only an eccentric old monk to guide him.

Lord Winder is the megalomaniac in charge, while Captain Swing and his secret police of Cable Street Particulars keep the city in constant fear. But the tensions are getting high, on the old streets of Ankh Morpork, and there are only few days until the revolution of the 25th of May. Truth! Freedom! Justice! Reasonably priced love! And a hard-boiled egg.

It wouldn't be the one that changed everything, it wouldn't even change the city that much save for put another bastard on the throne. But it was remembered, and good while it lasted and for the few short hours it had lived, The People's Republic of Treacle Mine Road was glorious.

That night at the barricades, Vimes fights alongside (tries to save) all kinds of citizens; some were revolutionaries, some were naivetés, some were opportunists. And some were just doing their job.

morning keep the streets empty
the glorious revolutionaries of may 25th

"The Night Watch were the ones too scruffy, ugly, incompetent, awkwardly shaped, or bloody-minded for the Day Watch."

catherine feeny - unsteady ground

Black water runs deep
Underneath these titanic plates
Where you build your homes
You tie up your safety nets

When these plates meet
It is mountains they make
Yeah when these bones shift
There's an earthquake

Watch your step
You should keep your head down
You never know what tomorrow will bring around

sam vimes (commander sergeant-at-arms)

"I want to go home. I'm going to finish the job in front of me, and then I'm going to go home. That's what I'm going to do"

the decemberists - cocoon
the tainted election, the hole in the sky
command what is tried, what is true
but without solution, with feet on the ground
it won't make a sound 'til you're through
so loosen your shoulderblades
this is your hour to make due

sam vimes (lance-constable)

"Our mum says says everyone'll have a voice in the city when Snapcase is the Patrician".

the decemberists - sons and daughters
Take up your arm, sons and daughters
We will arise from the bunkers
By land, by sea, by dirigible
We'll leave our tracks untraceable now

fred colon

"There's too many alleys. There's too many people, Fred."
Colon brightened. "Ah, well, there's more coppers too, sarge. A lot of the lads found their way here. Good lads, too. And Sergeant Dickins, he knows this stuff, he remembers the last time this happened, sarge, so he asked every able bodied man who knew how to use a weapon to muster up, sarge. There's a lot of them, sarge. We got an army, sarge!"

bright eyes - nothing gets crossed out

Well the future's got me worried
Such awful thoughts
My head's a carousel of pictures
The spinning never stops
I just want someone to walk in front
And I'll follow the leader

ned coates
"Why haven't you told the others?"
"Things are starting, that's why. It's all starting. Who you are doesn't matter any more. But you're gonna get the lads killed. They could've been on our side. I was working on 'em."

talib kweli - the beautiful struggle
Yo, I heard it's said the revolution won't be televised
But in the land of milk and honey there's a date you gotta sell it by
Otherwise it just expires and spoils
And these folks jump out the pot when the water too hot
Cause the fire boils inside

john keel, billy wiglet, horace nancyball, dai dickins, cecil "snouty" clapman, ned coates and, technically, reg shoe.

It had been a mean, shameful little fight that had ended them, a flyspecked footnote of history, but they hadn't been mean or shameful men. They hadn't run, and they could have run with honour.

st. vincent - paris is burning
I write to give word the war is over
Send my cinders home to mother
They gave me a medal for my valour
Leaden trumpets spit the soot of power, they say

"I'm on your side when nobody is, cause nobody is
Come sit right here and sleep while I slip poison in your ear"
We have taken to the streets in open rejoice revolting
We are dancing a black waltz, fair Paris is burning after all

aesop rock - coffee
Walk that path with a dime and a stick
Walk that path with a diamond and wine
Walk that path to the firing line
Just walk... (walk...)

stars - soft revolution
The revolution wasn't bad
We hit the streets with all we had
A tape recording with the sound
Of the Velvet Underground
A K-Way jacket torn to shreds
And a dream inside our heads
And after changing everything
They couldn't tell we couldn't sing

Well...a kind of revolution. That wasn't really the word for what it was. There was the People's Republic of Treacle Mine Road (Truth! Freedom! Justice! Reasonably priced love! And a hard-boiled egg!) that would live for all of a few hours, a strange candle that burned too briefly and died like a firework.

dessa - the beekeeper
They took away our fire
And all that this scarcity promotes
Is desperate men and tyrants

What fine design, what hands, what minds
The envy of Eden, our tools and our reason
It’s clear in the animals eyes
We stand upright
Build fires at night
Made on the sixth day
To rest on the seventh
And now we just try to survive

lady meserole (madam)

"And we want someone who is decisive," said a voice in the hurrying crowd.
"We wanted someone who decides the right things," said Madam.

thea gilmore - apparition no. 12
And I held the future up to a looking glass
It bears a striking resemblance
To the embers of the past

I've seen the chorus-girls the ribbon and the rot
Seen electoral debates on the glass-rim of a whiskey shot
And I caught the glimmer in a hurricanes eye

havelock vetinari (assassin)

'Who sent yer?'
"I come from the city," said the figure, drawing a thin, silvery sword.
"Who are yer?"
"Think of me as...your future."

electric president - bright mouths
we are the people you were warned about
we are the monsters in your closet.
When you say doomsday we say everything's all right

rosie palm ("seamstress")

"Don't expect anything from Snapcase," [Vimes] said aloud. "Remember, there people who thought Winder was the future, too."
He derived some minor pleasure from seeing the look on Rosie Palm's face. At last she said: "Give him a drink, Sandra. If he moves, shoot and eye out. I'll let Madam know."

tori amos - welcome to england
Heels on. Go on.
Bang a Tango but do not get tangled
who can stay strong
when they only give you lies to lean on?

nobby nobbs (street urchin)
"It's got a Watch badge, trooper. Is it some kind of mascot?"
"I carved it meself out soap," said Nobby. "So I can be a copper."

black lips - bad kids
Bad kids ain't no college grad kids
Livin out on the skids
Kids like you and me

In Class, we are a minority
Got no respect for authority
And won't play well with others
And steal from all your mothers

reg shoe (bourgeois)

"They can take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom!"

moving units - bricks & mortar
bricks! mortar!
bricks! mortar!
manifest destiny
viva revolution!
viva revolution!

you are my captor
my bayonet
it is my duty
to fall on it

CMOT dibbler (salesman)

"It's called Victory Stew, segreant," said Dibbler.  "Tuppence a bowl, or I'll cut my own throat, eh?"

elliott smith - junk bond trader
keeping everything moving, everything static
I'm the hitchhiker you recognize passing
on your way to some everlasting

better sell it while you can

Probably there were less than twenty people in the city now who knew the names, because there were no statues, no monuments, nothing written down anywhere. You had to have been there.
[Vimes] felt privileged to have been there twice.

fever ray - keep the streets empty for me
Memory comes when memory's old
I am never the first to know
Following the stream up North
Where do people like us float
I will never disappear
Forever, I'll be here

Morning, keep the streets empty for me

“They did the job they didn’t have to do, and they died doing it, and you can’t give them anything. Do you understand? They fought for those who’d been abandoned, they fought for one another, and they were betrayed. Men like them always are. What good would a statue be? It’d just inspire new fools to believe they’re going to be heroes. They wouldn’t want that. Just let them be. Forever.”

a fine frenzy - rangers
cutting through the twilight, sword in hand
strangers once, united against the land

james vincent mcmorrow - follow you down the read oak tree
Names get carved in the red oak tree
Of the ones who stay and the ones who leave
I will wait for you there with these cindered bones

And now that that's done, I've completely worn out my copy of Night Watch. So please comment!

♥ This mix.

This is probably my favourite Discworld book, and you've done it justice.

Re-read while listening to this? I intend to.

This is very exciting, it would be cool if you could get a group of really good singers (or people who really do these characters well, because obviously Sam Vines and/or Reggie wouldn't need to sing really well) to perform this at next year's NADWCON!

This is epic. Great job at putting this together.

I love Night Watch. And i have somehow missed most of these songs. Going to look them up tomorrow.

I think it is my fave Discworld book too. Despite, or maybe because it makes me cry.

This mix looks amazing. The lyrics, the way you ordered the songs and inserted the quotes and grouped by character- it all makes me want to download this and do a re-read. Also the Decemberists were a perfect fit.
